USA reduced steel imports by 13 percent

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reports that the United States imported 13 percent less steel in the first half of 2019 compared to the first half of 2018.

In the first six months of this year, total US steel imports reached 15.62 million tonnes, down 12.7 percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, imports of finished steel reached 11.68 million tons, up 16.7 percent year on year.

The total volume of steel imports in June reached 2.02 million tons, which is 2.5 percent less than in May. In June, imports of finished steel reached 1.71 million tons, which is 8.3 percent less than in May.

The market share of finished steel imports stood at 21 percent, continuing to decline overall since the start of the year, when US imports rose to 25 percent in January.

Depending on the type of products, in May compared to April, there was a significant increase in imports of a number of goods: sheets and strips of all other metal coatings (up to 100 percent); severe structural forms (up to 98 percent); reinforcing bars (up to 56 percent); hot rolled bars (up 17 percent); and a standard pipe (up to 15 percent).

In addition, imports of pipes for trunk pipelines this year increased by 11 percent compared to the same period in 2018.

South Korea ranked first in terms of offshore exports to the United States.
