The production of passenger cars in the Russian Federation in March 2022 against the backdrop of large-scale suspensions of car factories collapsed by 72.1%, to 40.9 thousand cars, which was a record drawdown since April 2020, when due to anti-COVID lockdowns, production fell by 79 .2%, up to 30 thousand cars, follows from the data of the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation (Rosstat).
The fall in the production of passenger cars in March against February of this year amounted to 62.2%. In total, according to Rosstat, in the first quarter of 2022, 244 thousand of them were produced in the Russian Federation. (-33.2% y/y)
After the start of the military operation on the territory of Ukraine, a number of automakers operating in the Russian Federation suspended production. Some of them cited problems with supply chains and a lack of components supplied from abroad as the reasons for the suspensions. Interruptions and temporary downtime at car plants in the Russian Federation occurred earlier in 2021. Then they were caused mainly only by the global shortage of semiconductors.
40.3 thousand trucks were produced in the Russian Federation in January-March 2022. (+5.3% YoY). Over the past month, their production, as follows from the data of Rosstat, amounted to 14.1 thousand units, which is 19.8% and 19.3% less than in March 2021 and February 2022, respectively.
The production of buses with a permissible maximum weight of more than 5 tons over three months increased by 9.9%, to 2.8 thousand units. In March, their production decreased to 951 units: year on year - by 9%, by February of this year - by 25.2%.
In the first quarter, Russia produced 100,000 internal combustion engines for vehicles (+34.3% yoy). Their production in March, based on Rosstat data, was at the level of 21 thousand units, which is 32.7% less than a year earlier, and 54.6% below the level of February 2022.
The production of bodies for vehicles in the Russian Federation for 3 months of this year jumped by 34.3%, to 11 thousand units. In March, their production decreased in annual terms by 12%, compared to February - by 15.2% and, based on Rosstat data, amounted to 3.1 thousand units.
