Siemens terminated all service contracts with Russian Railways, including maintenance of Sapsan

Siemens has terminated all service contracts with Russian Railways since May 13, including maintenance of the Sapsan, due to anti-Russian sanctions.

“Sanctions and the requirements that follow from them make it impossible to further fulfill our contractual obligations to JSC"RZD". Considering the scale of the European Union sanctions against the Russian Federation, as well as the measures taken and potential countermeasures and their serious consequences in terms of the day-to-day operations of Siemens Mobility, it was decided to wind down business in Russia, including exiting existing joint ventures and terminating service contracts for maintenance with Russian Railways (since May 13),” the company said.

We are talking about all service contracts, including the maintenance of Sapsan trains, Siemens explained.

Earlier Thursday, Siemens announced that it would cease business in Russia. The company has begun the procedure for terminating its production and operations.

As reported, in early March, Siemens announced the suspension of deliveries and work on new businesses in the Russian Federation. At the same time, the company announced that they would continue maintenance of the Sapsan and Lastochka under service contracts.

Russian Railways will continue its own maintenance of the Sapsan and Lastochka trains after the German Siemens leaves Russia, Russian Railways reported.

“Maintenance of the Sapsan and Lastochka trains will continue within the framework of the current Russian legislation under the guidance and control of the Russian Railways holding,” the company specified.

Sapsan are high-speed electric trains manufactured by Siemens, which Russian Railways purchased for operation on Russian high-speed railways. Developed by Siemens specifically for Russia.

The family of passenger electric trains with the common commercial name "Lastochka" was created on the basis of the Siemens Desiro platform for Russian Railways. Lastochka electric trains in Russia are manufactured by Ural Locomotives LLC (JV Siemens and Sinara Group).
