MMK has produced 900 million tons of steel since the steelmaking plant was launched in 1933.

Today, the oxygen converter shop of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works is one of the most productive in the world with a capacity of more than 10 million tons of steel per year.

In 2006, an electric steelmaking workshop was organized on the basis of the former open-hearth workshop No. 1, which includes two of the largest electric arc furnaces with a total capacity of 4 million tons of steel per year. Taking into account the two-shaft steelmaking unit, MMK's total steel production capacity is 16 million tons per year.

Today, with this anniversary smelting, we are summing up the results of 2025, said Pavel Shilyaev, CEO of MMK PJSC.

"And we have something to be proud of, both as a whole plant and the steelmaking division, which has always been among the most advanced technological workshops. This year, we have introduced the technology of combined converter purging in KCC. And now, for the first time, we will carry out smelting without scrap, on high cast iron. Mastering this technology will add flexibility for more efficient and low-cost production."

The first steel was produced at the plant on July 8, 1933, with the launch of the first open-hearth furnace. By the end of the 80s, MMK had three open-hearth workshops, which included 35 furnaces. In the 1990s, open-hearth furnaces were replaced by modern oxygen converter production, and then by an electric steelmaking type of steel production.
