Netherlands mining and metallurgical holding Metinvest B.V. (Metinvest) of Ukrainian businessmen Rinat Akhmetov and Vadim Novinsky said that lawsuits had already been filed against Russia with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Mariupol metallurgical enterprises - the Azovstal plant and the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. The press service of the holding clarified that by the end of this year, more than 10 enterprises of the group will file similar claims.
Metinvest Group claims that Russia violates its rights in accordance with Article 1 of Protocol 1 to the European Convention on Human Rights, causing significant damage and destruction to its assets, depriving the group of control over its assets, in many cases effectively depriving the group of ownership of the assets, as well as depriving the group of the ability to use its assets for commercial purposes and earn income.
“Therefore each company of the group that has suffered damage as a result of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine since February 2022 is filing a lawsuit against Russia to hold it accountable for the destruction it has caused to the group's assets and demand fair compensation for the damage caused by Russian aggression," - The company said in a statement on Tuesday.
The group's statements follow a similar lawsuit filed by Metinvest co-owner Rinat Akhmetov, who he filed with the ECHR on June 23, 2022.
“Metinvest Group supports his claim, considers the statements of its enterprises as complementary and acts in full coordination with its shareholder in the process of considering cases,” the company’s press service noted .
