PAO Severstal, one of the world's largest vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has begun a hot test phase at the second block of coke oven battery No. 11 (KB-11) at Cherepovetskommetallurgicheskiy kombinat (CherMK, part of the Severstal Russianstal division).

“With the start of hot tests of the second block of coke oven battery No. 11, we are completing a significant stage in the long-term re-equipment of the first repartition of CherMK. The project cost is about 35 billion rubles. This investment adds additional potential to our leadership in profitability and cost of steel through the use of cheaper grades of coal, as well as the ability to flexibly restructure processes depending on the market situation, while the new complex is equipped with the best available technologies in the field of environmental protection. At the same time, new capacities in the technological chain make it possible to decommission less environmentally friendly and safer coke batteries at the CherMK site, ”comments Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal.

The total capacity of KB-11 is 1.4 million tonnes of products per year, which is twice the average productivity of conventional coke oven batteries. The new unit will allow to increase the coke production volumes for the increasing volumes of iron and steel production. The key feature of the new unit is the coal charge compaction technology, which Severstal has mastered during the hot tests of the first battery unit. The technology allows to achieve high economic efficiency of production through the use of low-value coal without loss of product quality.

The environmental component of the investment project is unique on a number of engineering solutions. For example, a dust-free coke extraction system from the chamber will allow cleaning dust emissions from a bag filter up to the level of the cleanest metallurgical enterprises in the world - 10 mg /m3. The battery complex is equipped with systems for smokeless charging of furnaces, which makes it possible to operate practically without fugitive gas emissions. Thanks to these and other measures, which cost more than 1.6 billion rubles, the specific emission from the coke oven battery No. 11 will be 20% lower than the total specific emission from the coke oven batteries No. 7-10.

For reference:

Construction of coke oven battery No. 11 began in 2018. The construction project of the unit received a positive conclusion from the Glavgosexpertiza. The general contractor for the development of the working documentation was Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A. The general contractor for the construction is Trest Koksokhimmontazh JSC (Moscow). The infrastructure facilities - condensation, power and power supply, water supply and sewerage departments, as well as the arrangement of inter-shop communications were performed by INTECH CJSC (St. Petersburg). The dry coke quenching unit for the new unit was erected by Koksokhimmontazh-2 OJSC (Cherepovets). The project involves the construction of two units, each with a capacity of 700 thousand tons per year. Hot commissioning of the first KB-11 unit began in November 2020.
