Lake Tavatui (Sverdlovsk region)
The Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company organized a summer design school on Lake Tavatui. Its participants were the winners of the competition "Engineering of UMMC" - 96 boys and girls from 21 cities of Russia at the age from 14 to 17 years. During the academic year, the guys successfully worked on projects for industrial enterprises of the holding, a number of ideas were accepted by the company's management for implementation.
At the engineering school, young people were divided into six project teams. Each group solves its own problem for the mining and metallurgical industry or the city where the production is located.
“This is a kind of intensive Engineering. In a group, each member has his own task and his own special function. Project teams need to quickly solve the cases formulated at the company's enterprises. The work is carried out under the guidance of experienced methodologists and practitioners ", - explained Nina Gromyko, the scientific director of UMMC Engineering, Doctor of Philosophy.
So, during a shift that will last three weeks, novice engineers will have to develop solutions for automation of the work of the technical control department of an underground mine, train artificial intelligence to control a copper smelting furnace, formulate proposals for the utilization of sulfuric acid (processing into fertilizers) and greening of an industrial site, as well as start implementing projects developed last year - for predicting energy consumption and developing cycling infrastructure in Verkhnyaya Pyshma.
“Production needs engineers of a new formation. The world is changing rapidly, and all changes are absorbed by the youth faster than others. It is these guys who will build our future, and we expect that they will help our company to be in leading positions, "said Olga Smirnova, Head of HR Department at UMMC-Holding.
The educational program for the engineering shift was developed by the personnel department of UMMC together with key specialists of the company from the services of the technical director, director of mining production, energy director with the participation of the holding's enterprises. The young inventors have already visited the Sredneuralsky Copper Smelting Plant and Uralelektromed, met with representatives of the administration of Verkhnyaya Pyshma, received consultations on their projects from experts - about 20 leading specialists of the company visited the school. At the end of the shift, on August 27, the developed projects will be defended in front of the UMMC management.

The UMMC engineering team is conceived by the HR department of UMMC-Holding LLC to identify and support guys with aptitude for technical creativity and invention. In order for qualified engineers and technicians to come to factories, it is necessary to engage children with mining and metallurgical topics from school and develop their engineering skills.
The "Engineering of UMMC" competition was approved by the Council under the Governor of the Sverdlovsk region for the implementation of the project " Ural School of Engineering ", in 2018, an Agreement was signed to support UMMC Engineering with the regional ministries of education and industry.
Features of UMMC Engineering:
- topics of competitive projects are always dedicated to topical problems of specific enterprises, they are associated with real production,
- the guys get acquainted in detail with production, equipment, technologies under the guidance of a mentor engineer,
- a whole team is working on the project (up to five children aged from 12 to 18 years old), which is assisted by both a mentor engineer and a teacher (from a school or a center of technical creativity);
- the developed project is evaluated from the standpoint of the enterprise (relevance, effective efficiency, payback, manufacturability, etc.).
"UMMC Engineering" has been held since 2017, then 313 children from 25 UMMC enterprises took part. 18 projects of the winners of the competition are already being implemented by enterprises. In 2018-2019, the 2nd Engineering Games is held, about 400 children and 28 enterprises of the UMMC took part in it.
On March 27-28, 2019, the final of the competition "Engineering of UMMC" was held, in which 54 teams of the Company's enterprises met .
