Vorkutaugol acquired two new blocks of the Vorgashorskoye field

Press Releases

JSC Vorkutaugol, one of the largest coal mining companies in Russia, part of PJSC Severstal, has acquired licenses for the development of two new blocks of the Vorgashorskoye coal deposit with total reserves of almost 20 million tons of 1Zh and GZhO coal.

The side-by-side to Block 43, located in the southwestern part of the Vorgashorsk deposit, has reserves of 9.1 million tons of 1Zh metallurgical grade coal. In total, block 43 contains 19.4 million tons of rock mass. The company plans to start developing these reserves in the fall of 2022 after the completion of tunneling works. Within six years, the Vorgashorskaya mine will launch seven longwalls in block 43.

Block 53-c is located in the Northern block of the Vorgashorskaya mine, its reserves are 9.5 million tons of rock mass of the GZhO energy grade. The first lava of the proposed five will be launched here in 2024. It is planned to complete the development of the block in 2029.

“In connection with the acquisition of new licenses, we expect from Vorgashorskaya to increase the volume of coal production. The development of new blocks will prolong the operation of the mine - this is an important step for the further development of both Vorgashorskaya itself and our entire company, "said Sergei Likhopud, general director of Vorkutaugol.

In 2018, a series of experiments with Vorgashorskaya coals »Allowed setting up production of low-ash concentrates, including grades 1Zh and GZhO. Now they are successfully used at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant. After the conversion of the Vorkuta CHPPs to gas, this will make it possible to supply the entire volume of mined power coal to GZhO metallurgists. The experiment was carried out within the framework of Severstal's updated strategy. It provides common goals for the enterprises included in UpStream - the global direction of the company's work from the extraction of raw materials to the production of liquid steel.

For reference:

The Vorgashorskaya mine - the largest coal mining enterprise in the European part of Russia. The Vorgashorskoye coal deposit of the Pechora coal basin in the north of the Komi Republic is being developed. The mine is the youngest in Vorkuta and one of the most modernized today. In 2018, Vorgashorskaya produced 2.9 million tons of coal.
