The Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) organized an on-site examination of the commission of the National Award in the field of environmental technologies "ECOTECH-LEADER 2025" at the Taganrog Metallurgical Plant (TAGMET), which is part of the company. The object of the assessment was the enterprise's integrated water resources management system.
The experts, led by Sergey Alekseev, Chairman of the Expert council of the award, Honored Ecologist of Russia, highly appreciated the revolving water supply system of the plant, whose share exceeds 96%. Minimizing the need for water intake from external sources is one of the components of the plant's policy for the conservation of water resources in the region. The installation and operation of combined fish protection devices at the water intake of pumping stations serves the same purpose, thanks to which the movement of the water flow is corrected and schools of fish are redirected to a safe area for them.
In addition, TAGMET has been contributing to the conservation of the biodiversity of the Azov-Black Sea basin for six years. During this time, the plant has produced more than 140,000 fry of Red-listed Russian sturgeon at the mouth of the Don River. The award's experts highly appreciated the company's efforts in this area, as well as initiatives to improve and green the seaside resort town.
"TAGMET is a large metallurgical enterprise within the borders of Taganrog and the water protection zone, which imposes on us an additional responsibility to the residents of the city. Therefore, ensuring the environmental safety of production is a priority task for the plant. TAGMET has long switched to a more environmentally friendly electric steelmaking method of steel production, introduced modern gas purification equipment and recycling water supply systems, involves industrial waste in recycling, and implements numerous environmental initiatives. In 2021, TAGMET received a comprehensive environmental permit — four years earlier than the deadline set by the state. A special place in the plant's environmental programs is given to projects for the conservation and enhancement of the biodiversity of the Azov-Black Sea basin. We demonstrated this and much more to the experts, setting an example of maximum openness to the public," said Viktor Novikov, Managing Director of TAGMET.
"What we saw at TAGMET, namely, the company's integrated water resources management system, confirms the fact that the direction of the company's work and development has been chosen and implemented correctly from the point of view of environmental conservation," said Sergey Alekseev.
The ECOTECH LEADER Award has been held since 2021 and is awarded for achievements in the development, implementation and promotion of effective technologies in the field of ecology.
