Metalloinvest, a leading manufacturer and supplier of iron ore products and hot briquetted iron in the world market, one of the regional producers of high-quality steel, presented the key objectives of its Environmental Program at the second annual National Forum on Sustainable Development, organized by the newspaper Vedomosti ".
During the conference, speakers discussed the risks and prospects for Russian business in the field of sustainable development in the context of the global agenda and the challenges of the pandemic. Also, the forum participants considered the factors influencing the transformation of production in various industries in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
“For the mining and smelting company, sustainable development is primarily about minimizing the impact on the environment,” said Yulia Mazanova, Deputy General Director for Sustainable Development and Corporate Communications at Metalloinvest Management Company. - This year Metalloinvest launched the Environmental Program, and the Climate Strategy is being finalized. We develop and implement technologies that underlie green metallurgy, we contribute to the development of the industry in the direction of reducing the carbon footprint and respecting the environment. "
Yulia Mazanova noted that the Company's Environmental Program for 2020-2025. provides for investments in the amount of more than 21 billion rubles. By 2025, the reduction in emissions into the air by Metalloinvest's enterprises should be reduced by 7%. Mikhailovsky GOK and OEMK are to switch to a closed recycling water supply system, and another company of the Company - Lebedinsky GOK - is set to reduce wastewater discharges by 50%. As a result of the construction of conveyor complexes, overburden formation at LGOK and MGOK will be reduced by one third, while complete processing of all process waste and materials will be ensured, excluding overburden and tailings of the Company's mining and processing plants.
The conference was attended by representatives of large international companies, ministries and departments, the UN General Assembly, scientific centers, leading financial institutions and professional communities, such as the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, Gazprombank, Sibur, Norilsk Nickel, Skolkovo and others.
Metalloinvest supports UN global initiatives, including the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). In 2019, the Company joined the United Nations Global Compact, an international initiative in the field of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
In 2020, Metalloinvest approved the Environmental Program for a five-year term. It provides for investments in the amount of more than 21 billion rubles in a set of technological and environmental measures with a direct environmental effect at all production sites of the Company.
Metalloinvest attaches great importance to openness and exchange of experience in order to achieve strategic goals of sustainable development. To this end, the Company has been publishing non-financial statements since 2009. In 2019, Metalloinvest took a high 4th place in the WWF rating of openness of mining and metallurgical companies in the field of environmental responsibility.
