PAO Severstal, one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, by the end of 2020 reduced discharges to the Costa River from the Cherepovets Steel ").
In 2020, PJSC Severstal did not allow excess and above-limit discharge of pollutants in two existing outlets - No. 3 and 10. At the same time, in both outlets, the company achieved a reduction in emissions: for outlet No. 3 - by 21 , 6%, for issue No. 10 by 27%.
Such a result was given by investment and organizational measures. The decrease in the discharge of ammonium ion, nitrites, sulfates, zinc was due to the more unstable operation of the zinc sludge processing section, changes in the sludge development scheme in ash and sludge ponds, decommissioning of the continuous pickling unit No. 1, as well as the implementation of other measures. Also, the decrease in the discharge of pollutants was due to the exclusion of pollutants from the standardized ones.
According to Evgeny Vinogradov, General Director of the Severstal Russian Steel Division and resource assets, the closedness of the CherMK water circulation system is 98.4%, which is one of the the best performance in the industry. Since 1995, at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant, seven outlets of water in the rivers Yagorba, Koshta, Sheksna have been closed. In 2020, the company started to implement a set of measures aimed at further reducing the discharge of pollutants at outlet No. 3 into the Costa River.
“A team of experts has done a lot to reduce costs and find optimal technical solutions to accomplish this task. Thanks to the work done, we have outlined ways to solve the environmental problem. The total amount of investments that will be directed to the implementation of the project will amount to 3.8 billion rubles. We are starting the first three events this year. The company will allocate more than 880 million rubles for this, ”noted Evgeny Vinogradov.
