The economic effect of measures to reduce the consumption of energy resources in the subdivisions of the plant and the companies of the PJSC MMK Group on an annualized basis amounted to over 44.2 million rubles. In particular, in the second quarter of 2021, it was possible to reduce electricity consumption by 1.89 million kWh in annual terms, thereby saving more than 7 million rubles. Among the main activities in this direction are the replacement of incandescent lamps with LED lamps, modernization of lighting systems, decommissioning and replacement of energy-intensive equipment, etc. In addition, the implementation of the energy saving program allowed to save in annual terms about 9.5 thousand tons of fuel equivalent to the amount of almost 34.5 million rubles, about 1665 Gcal of thermal energy, 161 thousand cubic meters of compressed air and air separation products, 810 cubic meters drinking water. Saving of process water amounted to 1639.5 thousand cubic meters.
The environmental dimension of MMK's activities in the field of energy conservation is no less significant than the resulting economic effect. This direction is in line with the company's strategic course for compliance with the goals and principles of sustainable development (ESG). “This area of work is becoming even more relevant in light of new international environmental requirements and the expected introduction of the so-called 'carbon tax' in important markets for us. That is why the updated strategy of the Group provides for the reduction of specific CO2 emissions per ton of steel to the world average level and even lower by 2025. We are also committed to drastically reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide and dust. These goals are expected to be achieved by improving energy efficiency and further modernizing production facilities. In 2020, MMK was awarded the International Energy Management Insight Awards in the field of energy conservation and energy efficiency of production in accordance with the international standard ISO 50001, which testifies to the company's commitment to ESG principles and the efficiency of energy policy, ”noted Pavel, PJSC MMK CEO Shilyaev.
In general, the implementation of energy saving projects (including quick payback low-cost initiatives and energy service contracts) in the PJSC MMK Group ensured an economic effect of 534 million rubles in the first half of 2021.
