Industrial solar power plants in Ukraine: transition from feed-in tariff to own generation

The construction of solar power stations for industry has undergone significant changes in just a decade; now rooftop solar power plants operating to compensate for their own consumption have become dominant

Literally in a decade, Ukrainian solar energy has undergone significant structural changes. If initially industrial solar power plants in Ukraine were built to operate under a feed-in tariff, the capacity of such solar power plants practically doubled every year, but then a crisis of non-payments followed. The state, which froze the price of solar electricity in euros, was simply unable to purchase such a volume of electricity. Therefore, investments began to decline, and the volume of capacity put into operation began to decline rapidly. It seemed that the time of powerful SES was a thing of the past.

Construction of solar stations for industry: why it became profitable

Paradoxically, the situation began to change rapidly with the onset of the crisis in the Ukrainian energy sector. After massive rocket attacks in the winter of 2022, a shortage of generating capacity sharply manifested itself, which led to the shutdown, first of all, of industrial facilities. The situation only worsened in 2023, and became almost catastrophic in the spring of 2024, when blackouts in some areas lasted for several days. Therefore, in order to maintain production, enterprise owners began to develop their own generation. And if initially the focus was on diesel or gasoline generators, then over time the emphasis shifted to photovoltaic installations. Despite the fact that their cost is significantly higher, they have a number of advantages:

  • There is no need to purchase, transport and store energy (gasoline, diesel, coal or gas), solar energy is free and accessible in sufficient quantities throughout Ukraine.
  • Solar stations have a high level of autonomy and require minimal maintenance. To ensure the functioning of even a very powerful solar power plant, you will need to hire several additional people, or better yet, outsource this process. If the generator needs to be refueled daily and consumables regularly changed (candles, filters, oils), then a solar power installation requires maintenance only a couple of times a year.
  • Special software analyzes in real time the efficiency of generation and the performance of all elements of the solar power plant, warning the owner about deviations from the norm.
  • Long service life - modern solar panels from the world's TOP manufacturers remain operational for at least 30 years, during this time, their power decreases by no more than 15%.

Well, the main point that needs to be noted is the sharply increased prices for electricity for commercial consumers. It is this fact that made the installation of a solar power plant economically justified. Today, the payback period for a photovoltaic grid installation operating to replace its own consumption does not exceed 3 years. And if the enterprise does not have enough funds for an industrial solar power plant, buy //avenston .com/ru/services/utility-scale-pv/it can be borrowed at a very favorable interest rate.
