Forecasts for an increase in EV sales are cautious about an "approaching" battery shortage. The complete set of new cars and the replacement of batteries that have served their resource on used cars require more and more of them. At the same time, there are a number of difficulties for guaranteed elimination of the occurrence of such a deficit:
- Development and extraction of minerals. Most of the deposits are located in Africa and the countries of the Asian continent.
- Battery production. An environmentally and technically complex process.
And another option, which for some reason North American investors are counting on is plants for the disposal and recycling of old batteries. Such electric vehicle battery recycling has its own specific feature. The technology implies the launch of impressive production capacities (giant factories). Only in this case it will be profitable and cost-effective.
The desire to be the first in modern business is quite understandable and natural. Batteries recycling plants in the US are already in business projects. But the batteries themselves are not yet in the volumes necessary for their operation and are not planned until 2030. The operational life of batteries on already produced and sold electric cars is taken into account. A boom in their replacement with new analogues is planned for this period.
More practical than the Americans have approached the issue of building factories for processing batteries, developers from the Celestial Empire. They plan to create functional enterprises that:
- Until 2030 will produce components and consumables.
- When demand increases, they will quickly switch to the production of batteries using existing production capacities .
The project does not stand up to criticism by leading experts in this field and threatens (in their opinion) with a serious economic failure. Currently, the volume of nickel obtained from the disposal of batteries from the total amount of raw materials consumed by manufacturers is less than 7%.
Apple's plans
Apple's plans to use recycled materials for the production of batteries for its gadgets are related to improving the global environment. They are quite grandiose:
- 2021 - 13%.
- 2022 - 25%.
- 2025 - Apple batteries will only contain recycled cobalt and this is direct competition car battery manufacturers.
At the same time as cobalt, the corporation is launching programs to develop technologies for extracting tungsten and precious metals from aluminum from recyclable devices.
