Operating principle and scope of application of optical-electronic linear security detectors

In security alarm systems, linear detectors operating on an optical-electronic operating principle are widely used. The system forms an IR barrier.

Features of optical-electronic type detectors

Linear optical-electronic security detectors are used to protect the perimeter of a territory or premises.

They form a radiation barrier invisible to the eye . When crossed, an alarm is generated. The design of detectors is based on the operation of an optical system, which consists of a beam-generating transmitter and a receiver.

Each beam is a stream of pulses, so the receiver can distinguish a real beam from a beam of sunlight or from a beam car headlights. The detector turns on an alarm when it detects an interruption of the beam falling on the photo receiving unit, provided that the duration of the interruption is higher than the programmed period.

It works similarly fire detector. Only the receiver in this case registers the density of the beam and the weakening of its intensity during smoke.

The key word in the name of devices of this type is optical. The device operates in a range invisible to the human eye, as it is shifted to the IR region. Devices of this operating principle are divided into:

  • passive,
  • active.

The former are easier to install and configure. They consist of a receiver, a lens and an electronic unit designed for signal processing. With the passive method, there is a continuous reception of the IR background of the environment. If the device is an active type, IR energy is emitted.

Optical-electronic devices are volumetric, surface and linear. The names depend on the type of detection zone - the configuration of the space in which the detector can detect an alarm event , which is the movement of an object of a given mass at a certain speed.

When calculating technical characteristics, much depends on the distance of the object and the height of the detector. The permissible distances between the emitter and the receiver, the width of the controlled zone are determined depending on the product model and are indicated in the data sheet.

Application

In security systems, IR sensors are usually used to organize the 2nd line protection or internal volume of premises to detect movement in them. However, linear devices are also excellent for perimeter protection.

Passive devices have a relatively short detection distance of up to 20 m. In this parameter, linear detectors have a significant advantage over volumetric ones. For equipping fairly large areas with security alarms, 2 solutions are used:

  • installation of several passive sensors;
  • installation of active IR detectors.

Active linear detectors are excellent for protecting extended parameters.

When choosing detectors, you need to take into account the characteristics of objects, operating conditions, and technical characteristics of equipment. For indoor installation, the purpose of the room, height, floor structures, and equipment load in the room are taken into account. Devices intended for outdoor installation have a housing with appropriate climatic protection from high humidity and temperature fluctuations.

In each specific case, the type and sensitivity of the device is determined by the design organization in accordance with the requirements and recommendations of the documents.
