Vibration Tests for Power Cables

Электрика

Various tests are carried out to verify the electrical and mechanical properties of power cables and their compliance with regulatory requirements and standards. They make sure that the cable is safe to use, and is also capable of carrying current under given loads and under certain operating conditions.

These tests are important for ensuring a safe power supply in critical industries : energy, oil and gas industry, transport, etc. InSil cable tests include verification of many parameters: breakdown voltage, electrical and mechanical strength, insulation resistance, waterproofing, corrosion resistance, etc. One of the most common types of testing is testing power cables for vibration resistance.

Why vibration testing is needed

Such tests are carried out to verify the ability of power cables to withstand vibration during operation. This is important, as vibration can lead to cable insulation delamination or damage to other elements. As a result, there is a risk of short circuits and other emergencies.

Vibration can occur during the operation of mechanisms, transportation, etc. Conducting vibration tests allows you to make sure that the cable will withstand these operating conditions and retain its properties throughout the entire period of use.

How the tests are carried out

Laboratory testing of power cables involves the use of electrodynamic, hydraulic and electromechanical shakers. Electrodynamic vibration stands are used to create electromechanical vibrations of various frequencies and amplitudes. The required level of vibration is achieved through the use of an electric motor that drives the eccentric. That, in turn, creates vibration.

Hydraulic shakers are used to create high-frequency vibrations. They use a hydraulic system that generates the force needed to vibrate.

Electromechanical shakers are used to generate a wide range of vibration frequencies. They are considered the most flexible in setting test parameters. These shakers consist of an electric motor connected to an eccentric that generates vibration.

The choice of test equipment depends on the test requirements and the characteristics of the cable itself. Regardless of the type of shaker, the purpose of the test is to check the vibration resistance of the power cable and guarantee its reliability during operation.
