Parallel operation of diesel generators: features

When operating a 100 kW diesel generator and more powerful installations, it is often necessary to combine several units into a single system. This approach allows you to flexibly distribute the load, increase the reliability of the power supply and ensure uninterrupted operation of the facility.

Why combine multiple generators?

Parallel connection is used where electricity consumption varies throughout the day or a high level of redundancy is required. Instead of one powerful station, several units can be used, which are automatically connected as the load increases.

The main advantages of this solution are:

  • uniform distribution of power between installations;
  • improving the reliability of power supply;
  • reducing the load on each engine;
  • the ability to bring one unit for maintenance without shutting down the system.

This scheme makes the operation of the equipment more economical and increases its service life.

Conditions for successful synchronization

Before combining the generators, it is necessary to ensure that the basic electrical parameters match. If the requirements are not met, equipment overload and emergency shutdown of the system are possible.

The following indicators are checked before switching on:

  • frequency matching;
  • the same output voltage;
  • the correct phase sequence;
  • the phase shift angle matches.

Modern synchronization controllers are used to control these parameters, which automatically regulate the operation of the equipment and ensure a secure connection.

Methods of synchronous operation

Depending on the purpose of the energy center, different methods of combining installations are used. The choice of technology depends on the power of the equipment, reliability requirements, and connection speed.

The following options are most common:

  • precise synchronization with pre-alignment of parameters;
  • self-synchronization, which allows you to automate the process;
  • connection via an inductive resistance used in individual power supply circuits.

Each method has its own characteristics, so the final decision is made at the design stage of the energy complex.

The parallel operation of diesel generators makes it possible to create a flexible and reliable power supply system capable of adapting to load changes. With proper automation settings and synchronization conditions, the equipment works stably, economically, and provides uninterrupted power even when one of the units is decommissioned.
