Indonesia Wants to Become a Global Electric Vehicle Hub

The country with the most advanced economy in Southeast Asia predicts that a $ 4 billion US-led project to produce nickel-based battery chemicals will pay dividends and help attract electric vehicle production to the country.

Indonesia, the second largest automobile manufacturing center in Southeast Asia after Thailand, announced last month plans to introduce preferential taxation on electric vehicle and battery manufacturers, as well as conclude preferential tariff agreements with countries with high demand for electric vehicles.

Indonesian Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto on February 13, at a briefing for foreign correspondents, said that by 2025, 20 percent of the country's car production, that is, 400 thousand, will be electric vehicles. According to him, investments in the production of electric vehicles are expected from companies from South Korea, Japan, China and Europe.
