Indonesia plans to start producing electric vehicles (EVs) in 2022, according to a senior Industry Ministry official, after a number of companies announced plans to invest in the country.

Indonesia is pushing to develop electric vehicle and battery capacity to create an industry to process the country's rich nickel laterite ore used in lithium batteries.

Companies such as Toyota Motor and Hyundai have expressed interest in building EV factories in Indonesia, the second largest of its kind in Southeast Asia.

Toyota has pledged to invest $ 2 billion in Indonesia over the next 5 years, some of which will be used to produce EVs, Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto told reporters on Thursday.

“Electric vehicle production should start by 2022,” said Hartarto, CEO of Metal, Equipment, Transport and Electronics at the Ministry of Industry, adding that the government is doing everything to ensure that the share of EV reaches 20 percent of total by 2025. national car production.

In addition, the government is also offering tax breaks for EV battery companies in Indonesia.

Several companies, including China's Tsingshan Group, are currently developing smelters with the so-called HPAL technology - pressure acid leaching of ores for the production of battery chemicals in Indonesia.
