standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has blocked the work of 13 steel mills across the country due to violations of manufacturing standards of metal, in particular construction of the valve.

Chairman of the audit teams, Mr. Enebi of ONUCA told journalists on Monday in Lagos that the companies located in the States of Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Abia and Edo, are closed until further notice after the national market surveillance conducted by the SON Task Force from November 2019 January 2020.

According to Enebi of ONUCA qualified SON as affecting the life and health of citizens, steel bars and fittings, manufactured at these factories had signs of forgery.

"Laboratory tests and tests conducted on samples showed that most of them didn't meet the minimum requirements for diameter and weight per metre specified in the Nigerian industrial standard (NIS 117: 2004). This is a critical parameters in the standard for fittings for concrete", he said.

Anebi of ONUCA stressed that inspections will continue in support of the obligations of the SON to protect Nigerian consumers from the dangers associated with defective and dangerous products, due to the continuing collapse of buildings and structures across the country.

Commenting on the activities of the compliance standards, the General Director of the ITPO SON of Abuloma confirmed the need to promote quality products produced in Nigeria, in preparation for the implementation of the African continental free trade agreement (AfCFTA).

According to him, strict compliance with the requirements of the Nigerian industrial standards will facilitate exports and to prevent dumping on the Nigerian market.
