In 2022, the EU passenger car market decreased by 4.6%. This situation was mainly due to the impact of the shortage of components in the first half of the year, according to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA).
Although the European car market had a positive trend from August to December last year, cumulative sales volumes were less than 9, 3 million cars, the lowest level in the region since 1993, when 9.2 million new passenger cars were registered.
Among the four largest EU markets, only Germany ended the year in positive territory – growth relative to 2021 was 1.1%, driven by a strong performance in December.
All the other three markets performed worse than the previous year, with Italy posting the largest drop (-9.7%), followed by France (-7.8%) and Spain (-5.4%).
Volkswagen became the most popular brand in the EU in 2022, with a result of 1,019,352 registered new cars. In second place is Toyota - 635,533 units. Peugeot closes the top three - 556,591 units. The TOP-5 brands also included Renault (541,493 units) and Mercedes (529,222 units).
