UK police announced the discovery of 39 corpses Wednesday in a shipping container in Essex, southeast England. Police are identifying 38 adults and one teenager who died.
A 25-year-old truck driver, a native of Northern Ireland, was arrested on suspicion of murder, according to local media reports, after the bodies were found in an industrial park in Grace, east of London.
The truck is believed to have arrived from Bulgaria and entered the UK at Holyhead on Saturday. The Welsh city is a major ferry port in Wales serving Ireland.
"This is a tragic incident in which a large number of people were killed," the Essex police said in a statement.
“We believe that the truck arrived from Bulgaria and entered the country on Saturday 19 October. We work closely with our partners to conduct an investigation. We have arrested a truck driver in connection with an incident that remains in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing, ”said Essex Chief Inspector Andrew Mariner
