All parties have reached an agreement on the strategic framework for the resumption of steel production in Piombino, Tuscany, Italy.
The agreement, the result of extensive discussions between the Italian Ministry of Entrepreneurship and "Made in Italy" companies, local authorities, the Italian State Property Agency and the Piombino Port Authority, represents a key step in the country's national plan for sustainable steel production.
The deal is a continuation of the process initiated on February 19 this year by the signing of a shareholder agreement between the Ukrainian steel producer Metinvest and the Italian company Danieli on the establishment of a joint venture Metinvest Adria S.p.
A. for the construction of a new low-emission steel mill in Piombino. This also follows from a development agreement signed on April 18 with JSW Italy, a subsidiary of India's JSW Group, to modernize the rail production line at the site.
"This agreement is the result of a joint effort," said Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts by the government, local institutions and industrial partners. "Today we are considering the possibility of creating in Piombino one of the most strategic facilities for the introduction of environmentally friendly technologies both in Italy and in Europe," he added, recalling the critical condition of the facility two years ago.
Luca Villa, CEO of Metinvest Adria, described the deal as "another concrete step" towards creating a sustainable and competitive production facility that will serve the broader European steel supply chain. Marco Lerz, Head of Project Finance at Danieli Group, confirmed the company's commitment to introducing advanced environmentally friendly technologies at the facility, with a particular focus on efficiency and minimal environmental impact.
The framework agreement will now be presented to the trade unions before it is officially signed. The overall goal is to turn Piombino into a key European low-emission steel production center.
