During the conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, held in Rome, an agreement was officially signed on a program to support the restoration of the Piombino steel center in Tuscany. The initiative, implemented on the basis of a public-private partnership, represents a key step towards the reindustrialization of the region and the economic revival of the local community.
The agreement was signed by Metinvest Adria, a joint venture of the Ukrainian Metinvest Group and the Italian Danieli Group, together with the Italian Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Made in Italy (MIMIT), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE), the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, Tuscany region, the Municipality of Piombino and other local institutions.
The project provides for the construction of a new generation steel mill in Piombino with a total investment of about 2.5 billion euros, of which 1.5 billion euros will be used to implement advanced technologies supplied by Danieli. The agreement also provides for a development agreement with MIMIT, backed by a guarantee from SACE (Italian Export Credit Agency), which will be put into effect after approval by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
According to Metinvest Adria, the plan will create about 1,100 stable enterprises. jobs, including both direct and indirect employment. The agreement is part of a broader roadmap that already includes the signing of a cooperation agreement with relevant trade organizations.
As previously reported by SteelOrbis, the formalization of this program agreement marks a natural continuation of the process that began with the creation of Metinvest Adria, and the subsequent development agreement signed by JSW Italy provides for the modernization of the existing rail production facility. The signing of the agreement confirms the common goal of turning Piombino into a strategic European center for the production of environmentally friendly steel.
"This is not just an industrial project," said Yuriy Ryzhenkov, CEO of Metinvest Group, "it is a concrete example of reconstruction and international cooperation between Italy and Ukraine."
Thus, the Piombino plant can become a European benchmark for low-emission steel production, using the most modern, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies, as well as strengthening strategic ties between the two countries.
