Jaguar Land Rover's cyberattack has affected the Entire Steel Supply Chain

The effects of the recent cyberattack on automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have affected the entire steel supply chain, with supplies of materials suspended due to the suspension of production at various plants, Kallanish reports from industry sources.

The JLR company confirmed the cyberattack in a statement dated September 2, while it is believed that the attack began on August 31. Production at various plants in the UK, as well as at some other plants around the world, has been suspended.

Earlier, the company announced the suspension of production until September 24, which, according to it, will give "clarity for the coming week, as we determine the schedule for the phased resumption of our activities."

Since then, a further extension of the production suspension has been announced until October 1. However, on September 25, the firm announced that some sections of its "digital real estate" had already been launched, and was working to eliminate outstanding payments. It is an addition to its global parts distribution center.

One steel supplier says the situation has become a "nightmare" for JLR, adding that the supply chain has "completely stopped."

"We have purchased and processed materials that are ready to work, which is custom-made, and it is gathering dust in our order logs," they add.

The specialized nature of automotive products means that there will be few other buyers for this material, if any.

One supplier notes that it typically ships thousands of tons of metal products per month to the automotive sector, including JLR. Problems are likely to arise even after the resumption of production. "It depends on how long the delay lasts, but as soon as they resume, there will be pressure on the supply chain," the supplier notes.

JLR's UK production in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, which ended in June 2025, was 17,273 units.

In recent days, UK Business Minister Peter Kyle and Industry Minister Chris MacDonald visited JLR to meet with representatives of supply chain businesses.

The government said in a statement that it is in daily contact with JLR and cybersecurity experts to listen to concerns and see what support can be provided to restart production  It adds that during these discussions, both ministers acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, which affects a key sector providing thousands of skilled jobs.

"Getting JLR back online as soon as possible is my top priority, providing much-needed confidence to employees and suppliers," says Kyle.
