ArcelorMittal to start commissioning of new electric Belval equipment

ArcelorMittal is expected to start commissioning its new electric arc furnace at the Belval plant in Luxembourg soon, a source close to the steel company told Kallanish.

The commissioning marks the final stage of the SteelUp project! The Bellevale project, with full commissioning scheduled for early January. Since mid-October, the steel mill has been dismantling the old EDP and completing the construction of a new unit.

Construction of a new steel mill! The project is aimed at modernizing Belval and transferring the production of semi-finished products supplied to the Rodange variety plant. Belval is now equipped with a completely new EDP, a vacuum degassing unit and an upgraded continuous casting line. The upgrade will increase energy efficiency and increase steel production capacity by almost 15%.

Thanks to the new EDP, which replaced the plant that has been in operation since 1997, ArcelorMittal Long Products Luxembourg will become self-sufficient in steel production. The source confirms that this will fully cover the needs for finished products in the Grand Duchy as soon as the new equipment is fully operational.

The project provides for the creation of a digitized EDP "without people on the floor" with increased safety, a 15% reduction in energy consumption and a 15% increase in the productivity of heavy sections. The new vacuum degassing system will reduce the amount of dissolved gases.
