Car production in Germany increased in March

Passenger car production in Germany reached 400,800 units in March, an increase of 3% year-on-year, according to Kallanish from the automobile association VDA.

This indicator is positively affected by an additional working day during the month compared to last year, warns the VDA. In the first quarter, just under 1.1 million passenger cars were assembled on German lines, which is 2% less than in the same period last year.

Thus, production remains well below pre-Covid levels. For the quarter, this figure was 16% lower than in the first quarter of 2019.

In March, exports increased by 3% compared to the same period last year, reaching 310,700 units. From January to March, 799,500 passenger cars were sold abroad, which is 2% less than in the first quarter of 2019.

There is a clearer trend towards an increase in the number of new cars registered. In March, the number of registered passenger cars increased by 16% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 294,200 units. In the first quarter, 699,400 new housing units were registered, which is 5% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Over the past month, the number of new registrations of electric vehicles increased by 46% to 100,700 units. Thus, the share of electric vehicles in the total number of registered vehicles reached 34%, which means that approximately one in three new registrations in the last month was made on an electric vehicle.

According to the VDA, the impact of tensions in the Middle East has not yet been reflected in the current figures. Higher electricity and fuel prices later this year may provide additional support to demand for electric vehicles, the report notes.
