German unit Salzgitter expands certification of military steel for armored vehicles

Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter AG for the production of thick-rolled products, has received certificates for the use of additional steel grades for military purposes, according to a statement published on May 13.

Recently approved by SECURE, protective steel grades will now cover approximately 80-90% of steel requirements for military equipment, allowing it to supply a wider range of components and protection concepts from certified materials, marking an important milestone in its defense application.

Ilsenburger Grobblech has completed a comprehensive certification campaign, during which several grades of steel were certified for military use in accordance with the specifications for supplies to the Bundeswehr. Recently approved grades include: SECURE 400: thickness 6-45 mm; SECURE 450: thickness 6-30 mm; SECURE 500: thickness 6-40 mm and SECURE 600: thickness 6-22 mm.

Previously, only SECURE 450 and SECURE 500 were certified, and only in limited thickness ranges. A wider range of certifications increases the company's competitiveness in European defense tenders, especially where priority is given to local suppliers and approved materials.

Against the background of rising defense costs in Europe, there is a growing demand for certified heavy plates used in armored vehicles. These certificates highlight the importance of qualifications, traceability, and performance standards in the defense steel market.

The company said that the initial requirements for safe sheet metal have been met.
