Verbund and steel producer voestalpine are strengthening their strategic partnership with a focus on industrial energy supply and transformation.

They have signed an expanded framework agreement that confirms their common goal of actively moving forward in the transformation of industry and energy systems, Kallanish reports with reference to Verbund. It says that the new agreement forms the basis for the implementation of specific projects and cooperation in the field of renewable energy sources and the use of hydrogen.

This includes projects on the use of renewable energy sources for specific facilities, as well as solutions for the use of hydrogen, energy storage and flexible marketing. Depending on the facility and the initial technical situation, various supply concepts are being developed.

In the field of flexibility and energy storage, the implementation of battery projects at the Kindberg and Donavitz plants is currently being evaluated.

In addition, Austrian companies will consider additional opportunities in Germany. According to Verbund, rechargeable batteries make an important contribution to the integration of renewable energy sources, increase the flexibility of the energy system and increase the reliability of supplies for industrial processes.

The partners also plan to explore other opportunities to expand renewable energy production at suitable sites. In recent years, they have jointly installed photovoltaic systems, including at the voestalpine Tubulars plant in Donavica and the voestalpine Wire Rod plant. In addition, additional opportunities are being considered to expand energy production from renewable sources, such as long-term electricity purchase agreements (PPAs) for renewable energy sources.

The framework agreement is valid until the end of 2029 and establishes a binding framework for the joint development and implementation of promising projects, Verbund reports.
