the European Union plans to impose tariffs on lighters and furniture accessories from the US in response to us duties on imports of steel and aluminum, introduced by President Donald trump in 2018, according to officials of the European Union.
the EU intends to impose a 20 percent tariff for lighters and 7-cent fee on plastic fittings for furniture in response to the February decision of the United States on the extension of the scope of duties imposed in 2018 for reasons of national security, the officials said on condition of anonymity.
the Decision trump has affected about 40 million euros of European exports to the U.S. market.
Officials said that European duties must be approved by Monday and will come into force on 8 may. Postponement of the entry into force should give Washington the opportunity to reconsider its February decision.
in addition, the EU intends to add 4.4 percent to the existing duties for goods from the United States.
the EU defends their rights in the world trade organization after the U.S. two months ago extended the 25% tariff on imported steel and 10% duty on foreign aluminium for derivative products.
In June 2018, the EU imposed a 25 percent duty on imports of 2.8 billion Euro against a range of goods from the United States, including Harley-Davidson Inc., jeans Levi Strauss & Co. whiskey and Bourbon in response to U.S. duties on steel and aluminum.
