Tesla plans to export Chinese-made Model 3 vehicles to Asian and European markets, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.
The American automaker, which began shipping its Shanghai-made electric sedans in December, also plans to sell Chinese-made Model 3 vehicles to Japan and Hong Kong starting next year, one source said.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The American automaker is expanding its manufacturing capacity in China for the Model Y sports utility vehicle and is adding conveyor lines to scale up production of batteries, electric motors and automotive controllers.
Tesla plans to build 150,000 Model 3 vehicles in Shanghai this year and sold about 11,800 of this brand in China in August.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to communicate with the media. Tesla's plans were announced by Bloomberg earlier on Friday.
