In 2023, raw coal production in coal-rich Shanxi Province (northern China) increased 3.3% year on year, exceeding 1.35 billion tons, a new historical record, according to data from the provincial statistics office.

Raw coal production in the above-mentioned province last year amounted to approximately 29.1% of the country's total.

In order to improve the efficiency and safety level of mining this energy resource, the province has now 118 smart coal mines have been established, 81 of which were completed in 2023, according to data from the provincial energy administration.

In December 2023, China's overall coal production rose 1.9% year on year. reaching 410 million tons, according to data from the State Statistical Office of the People's Republic of China (GSU).

Over the entire past year, the country produced 4.66 billion tons of coal, which is 2.9% more than the previous year.

As for coal imports to China, in December this figure amounted to 47.3 million tons, an increase of 53% year-on-year, and for the whole year it increased by 61.8% to 470 million tons.
