In an effort to lead the way in the fight against climate change, the world's leading mining company, BHP, has pledged to invest US $ 400 million over five years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and products.
This move by the Melbourne Australian mining giant is a continuation of its policy of turning it into an environmentally friendly company. Thus, it is constantly reducing the use of thermal coal, introducing a number of innovations in production, including carbon capture and storage.
BHP left the World Coal Association (WCA) last year due to policy differences to tackle climate change.
BHP announced earlier this month that it is going to divest its NSW Energy Coal in Australia and Cerrejón in Colombia for thermal coal production.
Speaking in London on Tuesday, CEO Andrew McKenzie announced plans to more closely align company pay with environmental goals.
However, despite its good intentions, BHP generated 16.5 million tonnes of direct emissions in FY 2017-18, mainly through the use of energy and diesel at its facilities.
This is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions of 3.5 million cars or 4.2 coal-fired power plants per year, according to a calculator on the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website.
