He ruled that the facility poses a threat to public health, since the environmental construction permit in 2025 did not properly take into account the risks associated with the preservation of asbestos at the facility and emissions of fine particulate matter.
andADI was contacted for comment, but the company said it would not speak on the matter yet.
As for the steel market, this ruling raises the possibility of significant supply disruptions from one of Italy's largest steel assets, calling into question the Italian government's attempts to find an investor who will take over the management of ADI's operations.
The resumption of hot asbestos production will depend on whether the company completely removes the remaining asbestos and takes measures to reduce fine particle emissions to a safe level.
"As a result, operations throughout the hot production area will be suspended," a source close to the company said. "In any case, an emergency government meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.[today]to address the issues of high electricity prices and Ilva, so I expect we will have more information tonight or tomorrow at the latest," the same source said.
