Nikolaev shipyard "Ocean" has received an order for the construction of two dry cargo barges for the Netherlands. Along with this, the enterprise is undergoing serious modernization.
Okean General Director Viktor Trubach said that the owner of the enterprise set a goal to create a complete shipbuilding production.
“We really assess market demands, and therefore, despite the possibility of laying large-tonnage bulk carriers and tankers, we intend for the time being to limit ourselves to 15,000 tons deadweight,” he said.
It should be noted that the Nikolaev shipyard Ocean is engaged in the production and repair of container ships, tugs, tankers, barges with a displacement of up to 350 thousand tons. At the disposal of the shipyard is a water area of 42 hectares, as well as Europe's largest dry dock and technological lines for the construction of large-tonnage vessels.
Signed contracts with the Dutch shipping company Eurobulk form the plant's plans for the construction of two dry cargo barges 79 m long, 9.6 m wide, 3.5 m high each. These will be complete vessels, on which the customer will only install special electrical systems.
Construction is scheduled to begin in November, and ships should be ready by early March 2020. They will be delivered to the Netherlands along the Danube-Main-Rhine river route. The delivery of the finished vessels to Eurobulk is planned in Rotterdam in April.
The third contract involves the modernization of a river-sea class dry cargo ship based on the documentation developed by the Odessa Marine Engineering Bureau.
The importance of the contracts awarded is to support domestic steel production. 1,200 tons of ship steel has been ordered from Metinvest. About 300 tons of Ukrainian rolled metal will go for modernization, and the rest will go to ship construction.
