Indian steel group Tata Steel plans to cut 1,000 jobs in the UK, explaining layoffs to combat the crisis affecting the steel producers around the world.
the Company said that it needed "to accelerate innovation and advance in the direction of steel production with neutral carbon emissions.
the Company has not announced where it plans to conduct layoffs, but at the present time in Wales employs around 8,000 people, and its plant in Port Talbot is the largest metallurgical plant in the UK.
Henrik Adam, its Executive Director in Europe, said:
"I am very proud that all those involved in this business, devoted to their quest to succeed even in a very tough market. I also understand and appreciate the concerns of colleagues about these proposals.
Changes create uncertainty, but we can't afford to rest on our laurels - the world around us is changing rapidly and we must adapt. Our strategy is to build a strong and stable European business, is able to make a significant investment necessary for a successful future."
Earlier this month, Tata Steel said it plans to cut about 3,000 jobs in Europe within the framework of initiatives to reduce costs. In the Netherlands the planned elimination of up to 1,600 jobs.
the Company said that Europe became a place of cheap sales of steel and this, combined with weak economic growth means that it has faced "unprecedented market conditions".
