PAO Severstal, one of the world's largest vertically integrated steel and mining companies, became the first company in Russia to join ResposibleSteel.

ResposibleSteel is a global standardization and certification initiative involving a range of stakeholders, The aim of which is to maximize the contribution of steel producers to the sustainable development of the global community.

Severstal, as a member of ResposibleSteel, will start cooperating with other companies and organizations, exchanging experience and contributing to the development of new standards aimed at increasing the sustainability of the global steel sector.

ResposibleSteel's members include over 100 global companies and civil society organizations throughout the supply chain from mining and steelmaking to end customers in the automotive and construction sectors. Its members also include organizations dealing with human rights, biodiversity, climate change and other key issues for modern society. Today, the metallurgy sector accounts for about 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions per year, and as demand for steel products grows, the rate will rise at a corresponding rate. The world community has less than 10 years left to achieve the goal of halving global emissions in order to get on the path of achieving zero targets by the middle of the century, and adecarbonization of steel production is intended to be an essential part of achieving this goal.

Russia's share in world steel production is 7 , 5%, thus ranking fifth in the global ranking.

Alexander Shevelev, CEO of Severstal, said:

“By joining ResposibleSteel , we are once again proving our commitment to working with all industry stakeholders to implement new and better existing standards for responsible steel production in our operations. As the first participant in the initiative in Russia, we intend to promote these standards in our country, which is one of the world's largest steel producers.

We look forward to contributing to the development of the ResposibleSteel standard, which will provide an opportunity to objectively evaluate and celebrate responsible metallurgical businesses operating in an environmentally, socially and governance manner. It is important that we demonstrate to our stakeholders, including our customers, that we take a responsible approach in every aspect of our business.

Steel is 100% recyclable and durable. plays an important role in the circular economy. However, steel can only be considered an eco-friendly material if manufacturers continue to reduce their environmental impact and make a tangible contribution to the development of society. "

Anne-Claire Howard, CEO of ResposibleSteel, said:

"We are delighted to welcome Severstal as a new member of ResposibleSteel. We work with organizations at all stages of the steel supply chain, from mining, steelmakers and processing companies. Partnerships with companies such as Severstal are one of the 50 largest steel producers in the world, will help demonstrate the possibility of responsible production and accelerate the reduction of the climate impact of the steel industry to zero by 2050. Joining ResposibleSteel demonstrates Severstal's strong commitment to decarbonising the global metallurgy and sends a clear signal to other steel companies. in thirty years - this isambits a challenging but achievable challenge for an industry that will require leadership and a long-term commitment from many companies in the steel sector. ”
