Moscow, Russia - December 24, 2020 - Mechel Group won the Regional Development. Best for Russia 2020 ". The company has submitted to the competition projects to improve the environmental situation in Chelyabinsk and achieve conditions for sustainable development in the region.

The award identifies the most effective regional practices that help fruitful cooperation between enterprises, society and authorities in the territories of business presence ... The award's expert council, which includes the heads and representatives of more than twenty regions of Russia, determines the best projects in fourteen main categories: from retail to digital technologies.

One of the priority areas of the program is to identify the best regional practices aimed at solving acute socio-economic problems. Mechel was named the best in the Social Projects and Sustainable Development category, winning the Best Environmental Project nomination.

Mechel presented its social and environmental initiatives for the award. In particular, a project for the improvement and landscaping of courtyards and public spaces in Chelyabinsk. Over the past three years, the company, together with public ecologists, has carried out more than 150 such actions, planted about 2,000 trees and shrubs, and distributed over 30,000 seedlings to residents of the city for free. Mechel also organized compensatory landings in the fire-damaged areas of the Balandinsky pine forest in the vicinity of Chelyabinsk: 100,000 young pine trees were planted there.

The company also provided the award experts with data on the Eco-Projector environmental grant competition, which was held in the city for the third time. Experts select the most relevant ideas in the field of environmental education, volunteering, and landscaping of the city's territories. The authors of the best works receive grants from the company to bring their ideas to life. Over the past three years, more than 80 environmental initiatives have been implemented with the support of Mechel.

Mechel's sustainable development activities include the annual environmental forum Ecoengineering, which is an open platform for discussing environmental issues. Experts from various fields, university professors, students and citizens who are not indifferent to environmental problems are invited to the forum with reports - about 1000 people annually participate in the forum. Such a platform helps to popularize and implement the achievements of science and new technologies in the field of ecology, to increase the environmental literacy of the South Urals.

“We are very pleased that our sustainable development projects in Chelyabinsk were assessed by representatives of Russian regions. We sincerely believe that the implementation of such social initiatives will create conditions for sustainable development in the region. The projects complement the environmental agreements that we signed with the Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region Alexey Teksler. We are progressively implementing our commitments to reduce the impact on the environment by modernizing production. At the same time, we are interested in reducing social tensions in the region, creating a platform for discussing environmental problems, building good-neighborly relations with local communities, and encouraging interesting ideas aimed at improving the urban environment, "said Oleg Korzhov, Mechel PAO General Director. p>
