Independent experts summed up the results of the environmental audit of the Mechel Group enterprises in Chelyabinsk. The results were presented at the Public Chamber of the Chelyabinsk Region at the round table “Results of the environmental audit of Mechel PAO. Prospective directions for the protection of atmospheric air in Chelyabinsk. " The online broadcast of the event was available on the Internet.

Representatives of relevant ministries and departments of the region, the public and the expert community were invited to the discussion.

Environmental audits of Mechel enterprises were conducted by experts from Atmosfera Research Institute during the year " (St. Petersburg). The eco-audit covered all Chelyabinsk enterprises of Mechel: Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, Mechel-Koks, Mechel-Materials, Mechel-Energo and the Chelyabinsk branch of Uralskaya Kuznitsa. During the audit, independent experts conducted a comprehensive survey of industrial facilities, including emission sources, gas treatment facilities, studied wastewater discharges, waste disposal conditions.

Deputy General Director of the Atmosfera Research Institute Alexander Romanov noted that following the results audit, the volumes of harmful emissions to which the Mechel enterprises located in Chelyabinsk are entitled have been established correctly: “The bulk of the measurements confirmed the correctness of the established emission standards.”

the absence of exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations of pollutants, which are marker for Mechel's enterprises, such as phenol, naphthalene, benzopyrene, hydrogen sulfide, etc. A number of measurements revealed unaccounted for pollutants, while Alexander Romanov clarified that their inclusion in the calculation was not will lead to a change in the maximum concentrations in the zone the impact of enterprises and, thus, will not affect the overall picture of air pollution at the border of residential buildings.

Evaluation of equipment and technological processes at the facilities showed that they mainly comply with the requirements and the best available technologies (BAT). Partial non-compliance for some substances will be eliminated in accordance with the recommendations of the Atmosphere Research Institute for the implementation of BAT as part of the enterprise modernization program.

Mechel's environmental program until 2024 includes, in particular, the following measures: organization of a continuous monitoring system atmospheric air in the zone of influence of enterprises, modernization will affect all major production areas. These are oxygen-converter, blast-furnace, rolling shops of ChMK. At Mechel-Koks, the technical re-equipment will affect the benzene section in the capture shop No. 1, coke shop No. 1, two gas collectors at the coke oven battery No. 8 will be replaced, as well as a number of other measures.

Investments will amount to about 10 billion rubles, while emissions of pollutants will decrease by 14.2 thousand tons per year.

During the discussion, Vitaly Kuryatnikov, head of Rosprirodnadzor in the Chelyabinsk region, emphasized: “Already now we can say that environmental audit data will be included to the corresponding agreement between the region, Mechel Group and federal authorities. You cannot resolve the issue without acknowledging the problems. By identifying these problems, enterprises will be able to eliminate them with our help. ”

Anton Levada, Director of Production Planning and Technical Development at Mechel PAO, noted:“ Conducting an independent environmental audit was very useful for us, we were able to look at from the outside, to see objective reality, which generally corresponds to our own assessments. And we made sure that the activities that we had planned for ourselves even before the start of the audit, for the most part coincided with the recommendations of the specialists, so we were able to jointly expand them and make them more effective in terms of reducing the impact on the environment. ”

Felix Panov, a member of the Public Chamber of the Chelyabinsk Region, emphasized: “During the round table we made sure that the audit of enterprises was carried out as openly as possible and the company provided comprehensive assistance. This practice should be adopted by other enterprises in the city. A willingness to engage in dialogue helps reduce the degree of social tension in society. "
