PAO Severstal, one of the world's largest vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has completed a set of measures to increase the daily volume of converter steel smelts from 82 to 86 at the Cherepovets Steel Works (CherMK).
The final project was overhaul of the continuous casting plant No. 4 (UNRS-4). In particular, UNRS-4 was equipped with a new secondary cooling system, which automatically changes the intensity of the cooled billet depending on the casting speed, metal temperature, the chemical composition of the steel grade and the width of the cast billet. Also, at UNRS-4, five-roller sections were replaced with new units with “middle supports”.
“At the Investor Day in March 2021, we announced a target forecast for production in 2023 - 13 million tons. The modernization of the UNRS-4, along with the UNRS-1, which was completed last year, is one of the sources for the fulfillment of the long-term goals in the Upstream direction. In total, Severstal spent 1.5 billion rubles on the modernization of these two plants as part of our comprehensive program to increase the production of high-quality steel at the Cherepovetskommetallurgical plant.

Teams of steelmaking production took part in the project implementation , directorates for investments and directorates for repairs of "Russian Steel", as well as contractors from Cherepovets: "Prokatmontazh-3", "RusRegionStroy", "STA-electric", "ASM-group". The reconstruction of the URNS-4 was carried out in 26 days 15 hours instead of the planned 32 days.
