Stainless threaded tee: application experience and nuances of choice

In the world of pipe fittings, especially when it comes to food and brewing equipment, the stainless threaded tee occupies a special place. This is not just a part that connects three pipes at one point, but an element on the quality of which the reliability of the entire system depends. Over the twenty years of working with stainless steel products, I have repeatedly encountered situations where choosing the right tee directly affected production efficiency, safety and durability of equipment.

I would like to note right away that we are talking about AISI 304 stainless steel tees. This steel has proven to be the optimal choice for food systems.: it is resistant to corrosion, relatively easy to process, and economically feasible. Of course, there are other brands, but for most food and brewing processes, it is AISI 304 that provides a balance between cost and performance.

The main features of the stainless threaded tee

In simple words, a threaded tee is needed to connect three pipelines. The main difference from a welded tee is that the thread makes it easy to dismantle the joint, repair or replace equipment without complicated dismantling of the entire pipe section. In production conditions, this is invaluable: remember a situation where during a CIP (Cleaning In Place) or routine inspection it is necessary to quickly replace the assembly without completely stopping the process.

There are several types of stainless threaded tee: equal-bore, where all three connections have the same diameter, and reduction, when the side branch is different in diameter. Personally, I often use equal-bore tees in wort and water circulation systems, and I use reduction tees where a sensor or a pump with a smaller cross-section needs to be connected.

An important point is the quality of the carving. Even a small error can lead to leaks or assembly difficulties. In my practice, there was a case in a brewery when a tee with a poor-quality thread did not provide a tight connection, and during fermentation, micro-flows appeared at the junction. After replacing it with a product with an accurate metric thread, the problem went away.

Application in the food and brewing industry

In food processing plants, stainless steel tees are often used in water supply systems, CIP equipment, and liquid product transfer lines. In breweries, these are key nodes in wort circulation and fermentation vats.

I remember one case at a microbrewery: it was necessary to modernize the bottling system without stopping production. We used threaded tees to connect a temporary cooling line. Thanks to the threaded connections
