How a flanged pipeline filter protects equipment from wear

Even in a serviceable industrial pipeline, the working environment does not always remain perfectly clean. Corrosion and scale particles gradually appear inside. Welding residues and other mechanical impurities may remain after repairs. Together with the flow, they move further and get into the equipment.

At first, the presence of a small amount of contamination may not manifest itself in any way. However, solid particles affect the seals and working surfaces of the reinforcement. They can clog narrow passages, interfere with the operation of measuring instruments and accelerate the wear of mechanisms.

To detain such impurities in advance, a flanged pipeline filter is used. It performs rough mechanical cleaning and is installed in front of equipment that is sensitive to contamination. As a result, large particles remain in the filter unit, rather than continuing to move along the highway.

This solution does not make the work environment completely clean. Its task is much more practical — to reduce the number of mechanical inclusions that can damage subsequent equipment.

What happens to the impurities inside the filter

The main working element is a metal mesh. The flow passes through its cells, and larger particles are trapped inside. In this way, the impurities are mechanically separated without complicated additional treatment of the medium.

The size of the cells is selected depending on the required degree of purification. The filters presented on the Phobos website have a filtration fineness of 0.5 to 2 mm. Therefore, we are talking specifically about the retention of relatively large mechanical inclusions.

The grid is placed inside a metal case. The design provides access to it for maintenance. As the operation progresses, contamination accumulates on the surface, so the throughput is gradually reduced.

At this point, the filter element must be removed and cleaned. After maintenance, a serviceable grid can be installed back. Due to this, it is not necessary to change the entire node to restore normal operation.

The flange connection is also convenient in terms of maintenance. It creates a detachable connection to the main line and allows you to dismantle the equipment if necessary.

What problems does pre-cleaning protect against?

Mechanical impurities are especially dangerous for devices with small passageways and precisely fitted working parts. For example, a solid particle may get between the seal and the shut-off element of the ball valve. Gradually, this leads to damage to the surface and deterioration of tightness.
