1. Financial motivation
Many parents choose this option. They believe that if it doesn't work, nothing will. The method works, but only in the short term. Children who learn solely for rewards are poorly engaged in the process. The result is important to them.
You should not overdo it with material motivation, otherwise the child will generally refuse to do anything without instant reward. But if you have already promised to buy a scooter, you need to keep your promise.
Otherwise, the child will simply stop believing you. Several unfulfilled obligations can ruin family relationships for many years. Perhaps, in 15–20 years, an adult will remember these incidents in a psychologist’s office.
Material stimulation should be used in special cases when additional motivation is needed.
2. Encouraging exploration
Healthy children are naturally inquisitive. The parent's task is to encourage interest in learning. You cannot prohibit a child’s activities, even if you don’t like his hobby. It is much better to support the child and then gradually expand his horizons.
Perhaps over time the child will choose another hobby or the parents will reconsider their views. In any case, support is important for children. Prohibitions and reproaches lead to decreased motivation.
3. Praise for the process
Many adults do not show initiative precisely because they were praised from childhood only for the result. Fear of failure constrains any activity. Similar difficulties arise for people in whose family it was customary to praise only for successes.
Do not repeat the mistakes of your parents, evaluate the process. Praise your child for his effort, diligence, and diligence. It’s not scary if at this stage the student doesn’t achieve much; over time, quantity will turn into quality.
But you shouldn’t go too far and praise for everything. The assessment must be objective.
4. Achievable tasks
To increase motivation, periodic success is important. To do this, the child must be able to handle the tasks. Tasks that are too easy or too difficult equally reduce motivation. What comes too easily is perceived as ordinary. An overwhelming task can cause feelings of helplessness and worthlessness.
It is important to maintain a balance between the effort and the joy of achievement. In this case, natural opiates are released in the body, which serves as an additional incentive to continue exercising.
5. Criticism is for those who are already motivated
Constructive criticism is important for growth, but it should only be applied to those who are already motivated. If the child is not yet involved in the process, negative comments can put them off forever.
