German Transport Minister Says Hydrogen Powered Future

The funding is part of the Federal Republic of Germany's National Innovation Program "Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology" (NIP), with which the federal government has been investing in research and development since 2006. The program is designed to support the primary products needed to energize the market in various hydrogen applications.

“Hydrogen, fuel cells and electricity bring the future closer. We really need new research and support pilot projects because today we need to convince citizens that the technology works and is a real milestone on the road to future carbon-neutral mobility, ”said Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital infrastructure in Germany.

In the first phase (2006-2016), the Federal Government and industry spent a total of 1.4 billion euros to promote hydrogen technology. The FRG budget provides for another 481 million euros in funding for hydrogen startups until 2022.

The federal government also supports the goal of expanding its network of hydrogen filling stations to 100 by 2020.

Current status of hydrogen filling stations in Germany (October 2019):

  • 75 in progress
  • 6 completed
  • 3 in statement
  • 5 in planning
