German rolling stock manufacturer Siemens Mobility has signed an agreement on the supply of environmentally friendly steel with the Austrian steel company Voestalpine, which will increase the share of decarbonized steel in the production of rail vehicles, Siemens announced on October 17.
Siemens Mobility plans to increase the share of "green" steel in the production of rail vehicles to grow to at least 20% by 2025. The agreement with Voestalpine also provides for the supply of additional volumes of Greentec Steel Edition products with reduced CO₂ content, which can be delivered over the next three years.
Siemens Mobility aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050.
Steel purchase agreement expands the Siemens Mobility pilot project "Eco-friendly steel for Trolleys", launched in 2022 at the global trolley Competence Center in Graz, Austria.
The premium products of the "Greentec Steel Edition" series are manufactured at the Voestalpine plant in Linz using a CO2-optimized production process and reduce atmospheric emissions by 70% compared to conventional steel.
