SSAB Swedish Steel Service Center in Ghedi, Italy, plans to expand production

SSAB expands production in Italian service center

The SSAB Swedish Steel service center in Gedi, Italy, plans to expand the production of high-strength rolled products and at the same time improve quality.

The steel manufacturer plans to modernize its grade cutting line (CTL) to start producing high-strength steel in order to meet current and future market demand. Kallanish learns from the company.

This initiative will allow the service center to cut high-strength sheets into rolls along a certain length, including most hot-rolled strip materials made of Hardox wear-resistant steels and Strenx structural steels.Coils with a yield strength of 700 MPa and below are processed at a modern enterprise. As a result of the work, productivity will be increased to 1350 MPa with a thickness of 5 mm, which will allow cutting SSAB rolls of ultra-high strength to any desired length, which will lead to improved surface quality and evenness.

"The upgraded production facilities mean that SSAB will supply Italy with a larger range of steel in rolls, which is faster and more efficient than shipping lengths in packaged packages from Sweden," the company said in a statement.

In addition, the Gedi plant, which has a production capacity of tons per year, will also be able to better cope with low and medium volumes of production of high-strength sheets of various lengths.

3p3p356. 3p3p347. "The Ghedi cut-to-length (CTL) line can already process rolls up to 2050 mm wide, ensuring compatibility with future SSAB mini plants that will be able to produce rolls up to 2 meters wide."

According to FIMI Machinery, which will be carrying out the upgrade, Ghedi customers will immediately notice improvements in the quality of the steel sheets being cut.

"Thanks to three new teeth cleaning machines connected to the filtration system, scale (iron oxide) generated during straightening and leveling will be removed to protect workers, equipment and the environment. There will be fewer prints on the surface, which means improved surface quality. And thanks to better stress relief, the sheets will be flatter, which is a key factor for SSAB laser brands," they said.,

The equipment upgrade in 2025 is scheduled for the standard maintenance period of the center, which will last from July to September. The equipment is expected to be put into operation this fall.
