Finland gained the world's first metallurgical plant on hydrogen fuel

steel company SSAB announced the launch of a pilot project in Finland steel production carbon-free way.

"SSAB begins study in Finland for the production of steel without the use of fossil fuels. In accordance with the project HYBRIT, SSAB takes the next step to the creation of value chain, completely containing fossil fuels," reads message on the website of the company.

HYBRIT Initiative aims to replace coke used in the production of steel from iron ore with hydrogen. The new process will give off water instead of carbon dioxide. Laboratory testing and preliminary feasibility study showed that technological works and experimental setup under construction in Lulea, Sweden, will be completed in 2020.

the Aim of this initiative is ambitious and will potentially reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden by 10% and in Finland 7%.

"We strive to be the first in the world, and in 2026 to market steel without the use of fossil fuels," says Martin Lindqvist, CEO and President of SSAB.

"the Joint project Energy4HYBRIT, which launched today, will focus on the remaining 10% of carbon dioxide emissions arising in many other processes of steel production, besides the production of iron," says Harry Leppanen, Director of the environment and security at SSAB.

the Study will be completed before June 2020, said SSAB.
