Europe on the threshold of revolutionary changes in hydrogen energy

Europe / Digest

For 10 years, Europe has increased the electrolysis of hydrogen 10 times. About 1,700 of the cars with hydrogen engine are already travelling on the European highways and about 2000 passenger cars today are tested before shipping to dealers.

Europe on the threshold of revolutionary changes in hydrogen energy

Hydrogen and fuel cells can become a daily reality in Europe, allowing in large scale to store renewable energy for all energy needs, from transportation and heating tasks, to the production of steel, ammonia and fertilizers.

According to the study the European public-private partnership FCH JU, by 2050, the hydrogen can provide up to 24% of the energy needs of Europe, to reduce emissions of CO2 at 650 million tonnes, create 5.4 million jobs and generate in Europe 820 billion euros of additional GDP annually.

Fuel efficiency has tripled in 15 years, and the time for refueling has been more than halved to about three minutes for full charging.

Thanks to advanced research, Europe has become a world leader in innovative electrolyzers that use electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. Operating costs fell sharply, while performance levels increased from kilowatts to megawatts.

Since 2011, the capacity of hydrogen generation in the EU increased from 100 kW to 10,000 kW (10 MW) with plans of expanding to 20 000 kW. In July, 2019 in Germany began construction of the cell 10 MW - the world's largest technology using proton exchange membranes, which will produce up to 1 300 tons of hydrogen a year at peak operation.

"the Takeover market, large companies and public authorities have enhanced the credibility of hydrogen as a cornerstone of energy transition in Europe. Europe has a strong leadership that must be maintained by accelerating and expanding technology while developing the necessary supply chain and reducing costs," - say in the FCH JU.

we will Remind that the Minister of transport of Germany Andreas Scheuer stated that hydrogen technologies are the way to future of mobility with neutral carbon emissions.

FCH JU is a triumvirate that includes the European Commission, industry, fuel cell and hydrogen industry, Hydrogen is represented Europe, and the research community, presented Hydrogen Research Europe.
