Another fire broke out at one of ArcelorMittal's blast furnaces, this time at the plant in Dunkirk in France.
The fire started on the fourth floor of the blast furnace, but was quickly extinguished and the unit put in order.
Dunkirk has three blast furnaces with a total capacity of 7 million tons of pig iron per year. The capacity of the fourth blast furnace is about 3.6 million tons/year. It is not yet clear what the consequences of the accident at work may be.
Photographs of this fire, which started while the nozzle was being replaced, have been widely shared on social media, and the furnace is expected to be out of service for some time. ArcelorMittal reported this week that the damaged furnace is being emptied for evaluation. ArcelorMittal will use slabs from its other sites, most likely from Fos-sur-Mer or Dunkirk, following this furnace fire that affected the supply of slabs, sources said.
