Spanish company Grupo Industrial Cristian Lay (CL) has announced the closure of its Corrugados Getafe (CG) rebar plant in Madrid, ending more than 75 years of operations, Kallanish reports.
The company has initiated a staff reduction plan (ERE) that will affect 152 employees.
As noted, the closure is due to growing pressure from local residents in recent years, due to active residential development, which turned out to be just a few hundred meters from the plant.
The plant is also facing tougher environmental regulations from the Madrid community, in particular due to the extension of its environmental permit, which now prohibits nighttime operations.
Another reason for the closure of the plant is the impact of the US tariff policy, which has changed global steel trade flows and created competitive pressure, further undermining the viability of the Getafe plant.
